Race Recap: Virtual Reindeer Challenge 5k & 7k 2017

This race was scheduled for 12/2 but I already had a commitment that day.  My mom and I always go to a Christmas craft show at the local high school.  I was super bummed out because I love Road Rage Events races.  They hold them out at Mount Trashmore and they are always nice, small, local races.  I was super excited when I found out they had a virtual option for this race!

Packet Pickup and Expo

Since this was a virtual race, no packet pick-up and expo for me!  I received the package in the mail with my shirts, bib, medals, etc.  They ended up mailing them out late, I had already completed the race(s).

Race Day Conditions/Attire

Since the challenge for this race event was to complete a 5k followed by a 7k in the same morning, I tried to closely mimic that.  That being said, I completed the 5k on my treadmill before the craft show, and the 7k outside in our neighborhood.  It was a chilly day, so I wore a few layers and fought through a few sprinkles.

Race Time

The 5k went smoothly on the treadmill.  I took it easy, mostly walking, knowing I needed to complete a 7k later in the day.  I completed the 5k in 52:46.

The 7k was a little more difficult.  I love the distance of a 7k.  Our new neighborhood is about a half mile around, about .56 miles, so I knew I needed to do about 8 laps.  Its a really boring loop when you do that many.  It sprinkled for the last three laps, which made it a little cold.  I completed the 7k in 1:17:21.

After Party

Have you ever done two races in one day?

Race Recap – April Fools 7k 2016

This was the first race I’d ever traveled for, and the certainly the first one I’ve done out of state.  It just so happens that my husband likes gambling (responsibly!) and I had heard of this race from Hollie.  Thought it would be a great little long weekend!

Packet Pickup and Expo

When we arrived into Atlantic City, the outlets are one of the first things you come to, and we had packet pickup at the Nike Factory Store.  It was relatively organized.  Although I had my bib number, they still looked up my name and verified my number, then I had to go to another table to get my shirt.

Race Day Conditions/Attire

It was forecast to rain for the race.  It was going to be in the high 40s/low 50s, so I opted for long sleeves and my rain jacket, a hat, capris and my compression sleeves.  Since I had just lived though rain at Shamrock a few weeks ago, I thought I was prepared for what was to come.

Why do I look so happy to be going out into the rain?

Pre Race

Since it was raining, I decided to stay indoors as long as possible.  We were staying at the hotel right next to the starting line, so I didn’t have far to walk.  When they called 5 minutes to race time, I headed out there.

I tried to start up my garmin, but it had died.  When I tried to charge it the night before, it said it was charged! UGH. I decided I would just run blind and hope all the mile markers were up so I could gauge my time.

Race Time

The 7k and 11k started at the same time.  I lined myself up about 2/3rds of the way back.  I planned on walking/running intervals.  I got started and the rain picked up even more.  I was very impressed with the amount of runners versus walkers at this race…but I guess the weather probably scared off a lot of the would be walkers.

After about the first mile, I was so over the rain.  I tried to run as close to the buildings as possible, thinking that maybe it would shield me from some of the blowing wind and rain.  It didn’t.

It was really nice to run down the boardwalk and take in all the sights.  Most of the shops were not open yet, but the shop owners were standing in the door ways watching and cheering us on.  All of the volunteers were rockstars as well, cheering us on and braving the weather.

At mile 2, I was waiting for the turn around to show up, and I realized that I had been running/slogging the entire time, no walk breaks.  I was relieved to hit the turnaround and was glad to be halfway done.

I didn’t know this, cause I’m a wuss and don’t choose to run in the rain, but when you where a rain jacket, the rain kind of collects in your elbows.  I had to empty out my sleeves of water puddles about 10 times.

I took a very small walk break after the 3 mile marker…maybe just a tenth of a mile.  It was a nice break, but I got right back to running because I was ready to be out of the rain!

The last mile was tough, but I dug deep and kept pushing on.  I finished in 1:00:26.  I had hoped to be under an hour, but with the conditions, I can’t be too upset with myself.

After Party

I totally had zero interest in an after party.  I grabbed my medal, food and headed straight for my hotel.  I looked for Michael in our designated meeting spot and he wasn’t there.  Turns out he had headed toward the finish line to look for me, and I had already finished!

I was soaked through and through, not a dry spot on me!

We caught up with each other and I headed back for a nice warm shower before going to a nice big lunch!

Showing off my well earned medal!

When was the last time you had a Garmin fail?  When was the last time you traveled out of state for a race?

Weekly Update – 3/28/16

This week was good because it ended in vacation!!! I went to Atlantic City for a race and to do some gambling with my husband at the casinos.

Monday

Finally made it back to yoga class! Jumped on the treadmill for a leisurely 1/2 mile walk before yoga.  Class was a bit frustrating.  I’m still having trouble kneeling comfortably on my bruised knee. Also, Monday was a very stressful day, and my heart rate was high, which made my breathing not as relaxed as it should be…which then stressed me out more.

Tuesday

On Tuesday, my in-laws called and asked if they could drop by after work.  I really wanted to get a workout in, so I jumped on the treadmill for a quick 2 miles so I could still spend some time with them.

Wednesday

Skipped yoga on Wednesday to pack for my trip I would be taking on the weekend (We left Thursday night).  I tend to over pack when I’m rushed to pack, so I decided staying home and taking my time would be the better option.

Thursday

We left work early on Thursday to head up to northern VA.  Michael had an early meeting on Friday up in NOVA.  Since its over a 3 hour drive…he didn’t want to make that drive on Friday AM.

Friday

Michael had the aforementioned meeting, so I went exploring around a town center near his meeting. I went to the Kendra Scott store and got in a bit of trouble 🙂

Friday was BEAUTIFUL out!

Pretttttyyyy 🙂

After his meeting, we continued on our drive up to Atlantic City.  We got up there and went straight to packet pickup for my race on Saturday.  While the weather was really nice that day elsewhere, when we pulled into AC, the temp dropped about 20 degrees and it got really foggy!

Fog is scary on the 88th floor.

Saturday

Saturday was the April Fools 7k.  Recap to come soon.  I have one word for you: RAIN.

Ready for the rain….I think.

We spent the rest of the day at the casino!  We went to the Landshark bar for dinner.

The winds and thunderstorm were horrendous on Saturday night.  I thought the entire building was going to come down!

Sunday

We ordered room service! Spoiled!

We didn’t even do this on our Honeymoon!

The view is much better when not foggy – 88th floor!

Another casino day.  We went to Margaritaville restaurant twice on Sunday…oops!

Tacoooooos.

I had a great weekend and it was nice to get away from work for awhile. Hard to come back to reality!

Did you race this weekend? When was your last vacation?
