Weekly Update – 4/17/2017 & A Birthday

Monday – Thursday

The beginning of the week was pretty uneventful.  I got in a treadmill workout on Thursday of 2 miles, but otherwise, we spend the week doing chores and getting stuff done after work.  We have about 5 weeks left until we move, so there is a lot to be done.

Friday

My company is nice enough to let us have the day off on our birthday, so I spent mine shopping, getting free Starbucks, watching Netflix, etc.  I got in a good workout at yoga in the morning – not a bad way to start out my 30s!

When Michael got home, we went out to dinner and celebrated.

Saturday

Saturday was my big party day.  My mom and husband planned a party for me at her house.  We had tacos – my favorite – and cake pops for dessert.  It was really good to see everyone – I have some friends that I don’t get to see as often as I like.  It was a great time with family and friends – they are the most important things in our lives!

Sunday

On Sunday, we went to pick out furniture and area rugs for our new house.  It was a busy day, but we got a lot done.

How was your weekend? What do you enjoy doing for your birthday?

Race Recap: ODU Big Blue 5k 2017

untitled12.pngThis was my second time doing the ODU Big Blue 5k. I enjoyed the race last year, J&A always puts on great races, and this was no exception.  The highlight of this game is that you get to finish on the 50 yard line of the football field!

Packet Pickup and Expo

I opted for race day pickup, since I didn’t feel like fighting traffic on Friday night.  It was pretty quick, like most J&A Races, and I found a place to hang out for awhile.  I didn’t feel like taking my stuff back to the car, so I opted to do the dry bag check.

Race Day Conditions/Attire

High in the low 60s and partly cloudy…perfect running weather. I opted for a tank top, capris, and a hat.  I’m becoming more of a fan of running with a hat on.  There was a bit of rain before the race, but the clouds burned off quickly, and it turned out to be a nice day.

Pre Race

I had a lot of time to kill before the race.  It was a late start – 10:30am race.  I watched April the Giraffe give birth on my phone, chatting with some of my race friends, and just relaxed.  About 20 minutes before race start, I headed over to the start area and found my corral.

Race Time

They started the corrals within about 30 seconds of each other.  I had planned to walk most of the race and run if I felt good.  The first mile went by really quickly.  The sun came out in full force and I started feeling the affects.

The second mile was pretty good, and I ran some.  The water stop came at almost the 2 mile mark, which was a little late for a 5k.

The last mile was pretty easy and was a nice run though ODU’s campus.  I ran the last quarter mile in to the finish.  The finish on the 50 yard line of the field is pretty cool!

I finished in 48:16.  I was ok with the time given that I walked most of the time.

After Party

The after-party was tailgate style, and they had free Moes (yum) and Corona.    I hung out for awhile, ate my food, then got on the road.  Michael was sick and I didn’t want to be gone from him too long.

Have you ever done a football themed race? What was the best food you’ve had at an afterparty?

Weekly Update – 4/10/2017

There wasn’t much going on last week – hence the lack of an update.  This is a really short one at that…  Michael got sick with the flu, then pneumonia, and I spent most of my week taking care of him and the house.

On a more positive note, we got an offer on our townhouse that we are selling and we have a ratified contract! We are excited and will close on our current home 5 days after we close on the new house!

In the middle of all that, I did run a 5k.  Recap to come!

Weekly Update – 4/3/2017

This wasn’t a great workout week, but it was a really nice week otherwise.  I had some great quality time with Michael and got out of the house and had a blast.

Monday

Decided that since it was warmer weather out, we’d get in 2 miles outside.  We walked around my mom’s neighborhood (its a mile around).

Tuesday

Got in 2 miles on the treadmill.

Wednesday

I was exhausted from a long day on Wednesday and wasn’t feeling well, so I decided to skip yoga.

Thursday

We had our date night on Thursday and watched a movie on Netflix.

Friday

We had a showing on Friday night, so we got out of the house and went to Mexican.

Saturday

On Saturday, we had to be out of the house for a few showings, so we decided to drive up to Richmond and get our rings cleaned and get some lunch.  We found a cool place called Supper! and had some great salads.

We came home in the early afternoon, and then went out to Mermaid Winery with some friends and had a great night.

Sunday

After church on Sunday, we grabbed some lunch and did our grocery shopping.  We stopped by the house to measure for a fridge and got to see the progress.  We then went to Home Depot and bought said fridge!

We also had to file a police report because someone decided to shoot a BB gun through my taillight.

How was your week? Do you like going to wineries?

Race Recap: Shamrock 8k 2017

I know this recap is super late – but better late than never!

This is one of my favorite races, despite the fact that the weather is almost always crummy.  Guess that’s what happens when you have a race in March at the oceanfront.

Packet Pick-up/Expo

My stepmom and I went to packet pick-up on Friday night.  We walked through all the vendors, but didn’t get into a whole lot.  She got a new pair of sunglasses, and I got a new flip belt.  They’ve made a few adjustments and I love it!

Race Day Conditions/Attire

The forecast threatened rain, but it was supposed to be in the high-40s/low 50s.  I wore capris and a short sleeved shirt with a long-sleeved shirt over it.  I brought a poncho just in case it started raining.  I learned my lesson from last year.

Pre-Race

We parked about 15 blocks away from the start and had a decent walk to the start line.  We hit the porta-potties with about 15 minutes to spare.  We got in our corrals and just enjoyed all the costumes and excitement.

Race Time

The first 2 miles went by in the blink of an eye.  I lost my stepmom less than a quarter mile in – even though I know she’d leave me because she’s speedy. We faced a headwind for most of that time.  When the course turned onto the boardwalk, we had the wind at our back.  I took advantage of that and alternated running and walking.

Around the 3.5 mile mark, I started noticing that my sock was rubbing and I was getting a blister.  I tried to adjust, but it didn’t seem to help.

I hunkered down for the last mile or so on the boardwalk back into the headwind. I hoped to finish under and hour and 15 min, but finished very close in 1:15:13.

After Party

untitled1

I gathered all my food and swag after the race and headed to the tent.  I found my Dad and stepmom, grabbed a beer and enjoyed some of my food.  The music is always great – it is just usually SO CROWDED in the tent that we don’t stay long.

When we finally decided to leave, it had started raining.  I put on my poncho, and they had rain jackets, but we still got soaked walking 10 blocks to our car.

Overall Reactions

Despite the rain at the end, this was a good race and I wouldn’t miss it even despite the terrible weather.

Do you continually do a race despite historically bad weather?
