Wedding Planning Update

Its been a whirlwind journey since getting engaged last April.  I never was a the type of girl to be obsessed with weddings. I certainly didn’t give it much thought other than the fact that I wanted to get married.

The planning process has been pretty smooth until this point.  Michael and I were able to make all the big decisions pretty easily, and we got a lot of the big stuff done early on in the process (venue, catering, photographer, DJ, etc).

We’ve picked out the dresses for the girls and the suits for the guys and are just waiting for them to get all their orders in.  We are going to get our rings this weekend.  I’ve picked out the invitations and are going to order them soon! I finally have a hair stylist booked!

I’ve had trouble asking for help thus far, but I’m starting to ask for it.  I don’t want to be demanding, but if someone offers to help…I’m taking them up on it! I’m going to be working on crafts with one of my bridesmaids this week…she is super crafty and I know I can count on her to help execute my ideas well.  My other bridesmaids have been taking off with shower/bachelorette party planning.

I’m starting to stress out about some things, and I’m trying not to.  The goal at the end of all this is to be married.  Who cares if the decorations don’t look like what I imagined?  Who cares if something little goes wrong? It won’t matter in the end.  What matters is that I will be married to the love of my life.

If you are married or engaged: what things did/do you stress out about during wedding planning?

When planning something or working on a project, do you have trouble asking for help?

Merry Christmas! & Weekly Update – 12/22

Merry christmas

Merry Christmas!

Merry (belated) Christmas ya’ll! This was a week of a ton of family, a ton of food and only one workout. Sometimes your soul needs restful time.

After work we had the first of many Christmas celebrations! Monday was the annual Chesson Family Dinner (my stepdad’s family).  My mom always hosts, and we find a way to cram 25 people in her house.

Baby Mercy didn’t cry when I held her!

After work, Michael and I celebrated Christmas at my dad’s house with my brother and his fiance, Dad, Patty, Grace, and my in-laws. We do an ugly ornament exchange every year and I think the one I received takes the cake for the worst ever!

ugly ornament

Ew. So ugly.

They spoiled me rotten this year – I got 4 pair of Injinji socks, a yoga bag and a bunch of other stuff.  I have to say, my 13 y.0. stepsister is fantastic at picking out gifts!

Christmas Eve – I had to work a half day.  I convinced my boss to let me work from home, which was lovely.  I headed over to my mom’s house so that we could open presents with my stepsisters and their significant others.  I always love spending time at my mom’s house on Christmas.

Engaged ornament

Sweet ornament from my sister!

All the siblings left, and Michael and I hung at mom’s for awhile. We went to Christmas Eve service with my mom and Ken.

We spent the morning of Christmas Day by ourselves, opening presents.  Michael was sweet and got me some wonderful gifts.  He loved the gifts that I got him too.  It was great just to have some downtime with each other.

BMW gloves

Michael loved his BMW driving gloves!

We then went down to Elizabeth City to see his parents, brother and aunt.  We had a late lunch and opened presents. We got his mom a KitchenAid, and the look on her face was priceless!

We headed back to my mom’s later to see her and Ken for Christmas day.

Although work was open, Michael and I took a vacation day. Friday was a day of total relaxation….sleeping in, movie watching, eating, and just basically being a sloth!

I woke up and got to my workout with Danny.  Since this was my first workout in a week and I was feeling a bit under the weather, we took it easy. We did a lot of stretching and stability work.

Saturday afternoon, Michael and I went to return some Christmas gifts, exchange some and spend gift cards.  We also went to Men’s Wearhouse and picked out the suits for the wedding!

We went to church in the AM, and then had a pretty lazy day.  I cleaned up the house a bit from the insanity of the last week.

How was your Christmas week? Do you have a million Christmas celebrations, or is it pretty low key?

Trying on Wedding Dresses!

I’m finally going shopping for my wedding dress on Saturday! (tomorrow)

I’m being cautiously optimistic about finding “the dress” on my first trip – but how COOL would it be if I did!  I’m going to have an interesting mix of people there with me: my mom, my future mother-in-law, my stepmom and Julee (long-time friend and bridesmaid).

I’m going to a lovely little couture shop – so I’m hoping to get a more personalized experience.

Any tips for my shopping experience? Is there anything you wish you had done/hadn’t done?

Training and Planning a Wedding

I don’t know about you, but the idea of wedding planning while training (and working full time) terrifies me!  I know people have juggled many more things that that, but for me it seems a tad overwhelming.

We are meeting with our favorite venue this week and I hope to be able to make a decision on that and check that off the list.  Once we do that, I can lock in my photographer and I’ll have the two major things that are important to me.  I know you are thinking, “Wow, that was fast, she just got engaged!” Yup, its fast.  BUT – weddings for Spring 2015 are booking up fast and I want to get those things locked in!

I will be doing the Crawlin Crab half in October and Shamrock again next March.  I have a feeling that there will be a lot of wedding stuff going on during Shamrock training.  Here’s to hoping I can train and plan (and work full time) all at the same time 🙂

So I know I usually blog about running and training, but I’ll probably talk a lot about wedding stuff on here – because hey; its part of my journey!

Did you train for an event while planning a wedding? How do you manage to balance life and training?

Weekend Surprise – Engaged!

I couldn’t think of a clever way to say this, but I’m engaged, ya’ll!

After seeing several of my favorite bloggers get engaged recently – I NEVER thought I’d be among them (at least not any time soon!!!) Check out these exciting posts by Hollie and Caitlin.

I was so beyond surprised! I had been shopping most of the afternoon on Saturday with my mom.  Michael was texting me and asking when I’d be back so that we could spend some time together before family dinner.  We were going to be having dinner with my mom and stepdad to celebrate my birthday (April 21st).

I wasn’t really in the shopping mood anyway, so we cut the trip short so that I could spend some time with Michael.  I told him I really needed some “I” time, which is our way of saying “introvert” time.  We sat on the couch just playing on our phones, relaxing a bit.  He was insisting that we leave for my mom’s house at around 5:30.  She wasn’t expecting us until 6pm, so I didn’t understand why he was rushing me.

He opened the car door for me, which isn’t entirely normal, but not unusual, so I didn’t think much of it.  He asked me to get his gum out of the glove compartment. What?!  So odd. When I opened it up, this is what I saw!

The ring!

The ring!

I couldn’t even comprehend what I was looking at.  He was so firm in wanting to wait a year to even think about marriage, that I was not even thinking about the possibility that he would propose.  I looked over at him (he was kneeling next to me), said “Are you serious?!” about 100 times.  I don’t even know what he said, but he said later that he said “Will you spend the rest of your life with me?”  Apparently I didn’t answer so he had to ask “Was that a yes?” I said yes and kissed him, and kept asking him if he was serious.  He got around into the driver’s seat so he could answer my million questions.  He kept asking me to look at the ring, but I was so focused on him and I couldn’t believe how lucky I was!

He had talked to my parents during the week prior and I had NO CLUE!  He is so sneaky.  In fact, he told me he was helping his dad fix a mower when he was actually driving up to Richmond to pick up my ring.

The ring is gorgeous, by the way.  Pictures do not do it justice.  It is a Tiffany’s Legacy cushion cut.  The large stone is just over a carat.  (I know nothing about rings, I had to ask all about it!) The ring is so perfect…Michael is so incredibly generous, I can’t even comprehend it.  I can’t stop looking at it.

So after talking and smiling in the car for about 20 minutes, we decided it was about time to get to my mom’s house.  She knew what he was up to, so she knew we’d be late.  We picked up some wine and champagne and arrived a little late 🙂

Mom wanted to snap a bunch of pictures, and this was one of my favorites 🙂 I don’t know if you can tell, but I’m wearing my Shamrock shirt!

We sent a million texts, made a million phone calls and had some FaceTime calls to all of our family and close friends.  I’m so blessed with the outpouring of love we received.

We had already planned to have dinner with my dad and stepmom on Sunday, and little did I know that Michael had arranged to have his parents meet us.  I’ll be writing a post about my birthday celebrations later…I wanted this post to just celebrate my engagement!

Marriage is an exciting but serious endeavor.  I don’t take the commit we are going to make lightly. I have a lot to learn about what this commitment means, a lot to learn about becoming a team and enter into a partnership with the man I love.  I’m so excited to embark on this journey with him.
