Race Recap: Surf-N-Santa 5 Miler 2016

This Christmas race is always a favorite of mine, but this year was extra special.  We were trying to break a world record for a Santa run.  It required us to wear a very specific Santa suit – jacket, pants, beard, hat and belt.

Spoiler alert: We got the world record!!!!!I am a Guinness Book of World Record holder 🙂

Packet Pickup and Expo

Since the race started at 4:30pm, I opted to do race day pickup.  I arrived around 2pm and I picked up my packet.  I wanted a lot of time to get ready because I knew I had to sort out the special Santa suit. They had special alteration stations set up.

Race Day Conditions/Attire

The temperature race day was a little warmer than I hoped. It was in the high 50s, and because I knew I had to wear real clothes under the santa suit, I knew I’d be a little warm.  I may or may not have sweated through my hat…

Pre-Race

I just hung out and watched all the people in their Santa costumes.  It was pretty comical to see thousands of Santas all together in one area.

I got dressed about a half hour before the race, and then headed to my corral.

Race Time

I love this race.  I started off running, but planned on walking most of the race.  Miles 1 and 2 were fairly uneventful.  I loved getting to see all the lights on the boardwalk and even stopped and snapped a few pictures.

After the halfway mark, I started walking/running some.  I was kind of ready to be done after we finished running through the lights, because the rest of the race is just through the city streets in the dark, which is only but so interesting.

After Party

I was able to get my medal and my Triple Jog Dare medal – which is awesome!!!!

They gave out gloves as a finisher item, which is pretty awesome, because I lost my pair from a few years ago at this year’s Shamrock.  I had part of a beer and some of the sausage and potato soup, but I was ready to head home and get the Santa suit off!

I wore my Santa outfit to Chick Fila to pick up dinner and gave the girl at the drive through a little giggle.

Do you do any Christmas races? Have you ever tried to break a work record?

Weekly Update – 12/19/2016 and Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all had a great time with your family and friends.  It was a pretty busy week but a very good one!

Monday

Monday after work was my last push to finish all my Christmas shopping.  Got that done in record time!

Tuesday

Tuesday was pretty uneventful.  Michael and I started watching “White Christmas” on Netflix…and promptly fell asleep!

Wednesday

Wednesday was a busy day after work.  We had a party for Tech Services (my dept), then I went to an ornament exchange party at my mom’s house.  The party at work was nice – we had alcoholic beverages and Buffalo Wild Wings, so you can’t go wrong there.

The party at mom’s was fun, but I wasn’t really into being social.  Normally I stay after to help cleanup, but as soon as Dirty Santa was over, I left.

Thursday

Thursday was our big family dinner for my stepfamily.  About 30 of us squeeeeeze into my mom’s house. Here are a few pictures from the night.

Friday

Friday was our Christmas celebration with my dad and stepmom. They gave us some money toward furniture for our new house! We will definitely get some use out of that!

Saturday

On Saturday we had a pretty chill day, got some last minute grocery shopping done.  We went to church for Christmas eve service with my mom and stepdad.

Sunday

On Christmas morning, we slept in, had coffee and chocolate chip pancakes, and exchanged gifts.  Mom and Ken and my in-laws came over later in the day.

I’m spoiled rotten.

Merry Christmas, ya’ll!

Weekly Update – 12/12/2016

Despite some work stress, this past week and weekend was a pretty good one.  We got to spend some great time with family, some great time together, and get a lot of fun (and practical) stuff done!

Monday

Monday was a pretty uneventful day.  I had hoped to get to the gym, but both Michael and I worked late.

Tuesday

On Tuesday, we went to my dad and stepmom’s house to make Christmas cookies!  It was a ton of fun!

Wednesday

House progress as of Wednesday morning!

untitled1

Michael and I have committed to try to have more quality time together, so Wednesday night was that night this week.  We try to avoid distractions, no phones, no work, no TV…maybe some Christmas music.  Its a great time to spend time talking and connecting without the distractions of the world.  In a world that is so busy all the time, its really nice.

Thursday-Friday

Thursday was relatively uneventful.  On both Thursday and Friday, I ended up working late.  We tend to have a lot of “clean-up” type work that goes on in the month of December and due to some changes at work, a lot of that work falls on me.  I don’t mind working late on weeknights, but Friday nights are a little tough.

Saturday

On Saturday morning, we got some Christmas wrapping done, and made a game plan to get the rest of the shopping done.  Michael went out and did some of that, while I packed a few more boxes to go into storage.

Saturday afternoon was the Surf-N-Santa 5 miler.  This is a favorite Christmas race of mine, and its the third and final race in the Triple Jog Challenge I signed up for this year with J&A racing.  More to come in a recap!

Sunday

Sunday was super bittersweet.  I have played on the worship team at my church for 6 years, and attended that church for 10 years (since the church began!).  Sunday was my last day on the worship team, and likely our last week attending the church.   The church is moving to a location over 45 minutes away from where we live.  The commute has become really difficult for us to be really engaged with the church.  We are going to be looking at a few wonderful churches closer to home – one just minutes away.

We also check on our house! WOW- Check out the progress this week!

untitled

After church, we grabbed lunch at Panera.  Then we went to Kohls for a few more Christmas gifts.  I got a new winter coat while we were there.  I’ve had the same coats for years and they are starting to get worn out, some of the lining has tears, etc.  I got a peacoat so that it is nice enough to wear to work.  We went to the Verizon store next and got our new phones!  We were due in January, but they had a really good deal on the iPhone 7 (for me) and Galaxy S7 Edge (for Michael). We also ran to the grocery store for the essentials and stuff for Christmas day.

We spent the rest of the day getting chores done at home.  My mom and stepdad came by for a little bit because we had some bad storms and it knocked out their power.

How was your week? Are you done Christmas shopping?

Weekly Update – 12/5/2016

This week was one of ups and downs. Work was crazy, but some good life things happened.  I know this time of year gets a little hectic for everyone, and I am no exception!

Monday – Wednesday

Monday through Wednesday were really hard days at work.  Wednesday was a break down day, where I just didn’t want to be at work, I was too stressed out.

BUT – this started happening at the house!

Thursday

On Thursday, Michael went out of town to NYC for work.  I’m a bit jealous because I’ve never been there.  I went out to get some Mexican food with my brother-in-law while he was gone. We had a fun time and it was nice to spend time one-on-one.

Friday

On Friday, it was SUPER cold! Since we had a warm fall, I was NOT prepared for only a high of 40 degrees on Friday.

I drove by the new house on the way to work, and here’s the progress!

untitled2

Saturday

Michael didn’t get home from NYC until the early evening on Saturday. I spent my day doing all sorts of good stuff.  Went Christmas shopping and did some wrapping, watched a cheesy Hallmark movie.

Then I went outside and raked the yard and cleaned out the gutters.  I wore myself out!

Sunday

Sunday we had church responsibilities.Afterward, we did our normal chores and watched the Eagles/Redskins game.

How was your week? What makes you feel like you’ve had a productive day?

Race Recap: ChistmasTown Dash 8k 2016

I’ve done this race before and really love it, but in recent years it has not made the cut on my racing schedule. I was really excited to do this one with Michael!

Packet Pick-up/Expo

Packet pickup for this race is offered at a variety of locations in Hampton Roads before the race. We opted to pick it up on Friday in Newport News, since its only about a 30 minute drive.  I tried on some shoes while we were there, but opted not to buy anything just yet.  I think I might go back to Saucony Guide.

Race Day Conditions/Attire

It was a cold day.  Temps were going to be in the high 30s, low 40s for race time.  I opted for long leggings, short sleeved shirt, long sleeved shirt, and a hat.  I wore a sweatshirt until the start.

Michael wore 3 layers up top and pants.  We need to get him so good technical fabrics for cold weather!

Pre-Race

We went down toward the start about an hour before the race.  But it was cold and that ended up being a very bad idea. We froze before the start. The start line was chaos too.  The corrals were out of order…found out later that they were somewhat organized, but not in a way that was communicated well.

untitled3

Race Time

Michael and I stuck with each other for the first 2 miles or so.  We alternated running and walking.  Once we got in the park, he started slowing down and told me to go on ahead.

My favorite part was in the park, around mile 2.5.  There is a bridge lined with Marines (the race supports Toys for Tots). I picked the right hand side of the bridge, and shook each one’s hand and thanked them for their service.  I got responses ranging from “Thank you for your support,” to “Semper Fi,” to “Oorah!”  It gets me emotional every time.

The course leaves the park around mile 3, and I kept alternating running and walking, using any downhills to my advantage. I kept looking for Michael during the loops and saw him a few times.

I finished in 1:23:19. I could have done significantly better if I ran the race on my own.  But it was more important to me to spend some time running with Michael and enjoying the course.

After Party

We were far too cold to stay afterward, and there wasn’t really an “afterparty” per se.  They just had some hot chocolate.  Definitely prefer J&A parties!

Overall Reactions

It was a very cold day, but it was a great time. I  love running through Busch Gardens.  Makes me want to go back for ChristmasTown for real!

Have you done any Christmas races yet? What was the most chaotic race start you’ve ever seen?

Weekly Update – 11/28/2016

Monday – Wednesday

Monday through Wednesday were crazy at work.  I have mentioned some of my frustrations before, but through the restructuring we’ve had, I have less help than I’ve had before.  Work that used to be handled by 3 other people is now falling on me.

Thursday

After work on Thursday, we had dinner at my mom’s.  My grandmother was in town from PA and it was good to spend time with her.  Since my grandfather passed away this spring, its reminded me how important family is – especially those that live father away.

Friday

I worked from home so I could intercept a package I had delivered to the house instead of work.  I usually don’t mess that up, but I did for this item!

On Friday, we went up to Newport News to pickup our race packets for Christmastown 8k.  Pickup was at a running store, and I got tempted by all of the shoes.  I think I want to go back to Saucony Guides! Afterward, we went to a cute little diner for dinner.

Saturday

On Saturday morning, I had to work for a little bit.  Afterward, we had a meeting with our builder! They are making some real progress!

After our meeting, we had lunch at JoJacks.  Then we went to the craft show at the high school and saw MomLOLZ. We got a few Christmas gifts for other people…and a few for ourselves!

Sunday

Sunday was the Christmas town 8k at Busch Gardens – recap to come! After the race, we went straight to Cracker Barrel and inhaled our food so fast I didn’t even get a chance to take a picture!

We spent the rest of the day doing chores and watching movies on Netflix.

How was your week? How do you spend your days after races?
