Weekly Update – 1/9/2017

This was a pretty good week despite the leftover snow.  We made it to the gym a few times, listed the house, and had a showing!

Monday

We had abbreviated hours on Monday due to all the snow and the lack of clearing on the roads.  My husband and I worked from home for a little while before heading in.  It was a pretty relaxed day, as I don’t expect many people were deciding to go to the bank in all the snow.

After work, we just relaxed and took it easy.  The gym parking lot is notoriously bad after snow and they were closing early.

Tuesday

Our current house is on the market!  Hopefully it will sell quickly. Tuesday was a rough day at work.  After work, we hit up the gym and I did 2 miles on the treadmill.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, I went to yoga after work.  I know you aren’t necessary supposed to pay attention to the music in yoga, but the music was really great this class! I’m starting to really feel where I’m tight and feel a noticeable difference after class.

Thursday

Thursday night ended up being a night out with my dad, stepmom and sister.  Thursday was supposed to be date night for Michael and I, but sometimes you have to divert plans to spend time with family.

Friday

We went to get Mexican food on Friday night and it was yum!

Saturday

We got up Saturday morning and went to the gym.  We had a house showing, so it was a good way to spend the time we had to be out of the house.  Got in 3 miles on the treadmill. We got some grocery shopping done, as well as some chores around the house.

Sunday

On Sunday we tried out a new church.  We went to my in-law’s house for a late lunch afterward.  We came home and vegged out most of the evening.

How was your week? Where is your favorite place to go eat with your family?

Weekly Update – 5/16/16

This week started off rough, but got better as the week went on.  I can’t wait to have a normal week again.  Here’s hoping this coming week is a bit better.

Monday -Tuesday

Home sick with a stomach bug.

Wednesday

I went back to work after being out sick and out for my grandfather’s funeral.  It was a really rough day…lots of work and I was exhausted.  I crashed after work and fell asleep for an hour.  On the plus side, I was able to eat a relatively normal meal for dinner.

Thursday

Thursday was a much better day at work.  I was able to eat incrementally more.  Still no working out.

Friday

On Friday, we went to Outback for dinner with my dad, stepmom and stepsister.  I had some salmon and broccoli.  My first normal meal!  It was good to spend time with them, as I hadn’t seen them for awhile.

Saturday

On Saturday, Michael and I had a pretty lazy day.  I did 4 loads of laundry, we did grocery shopping and some cleaning.  We did try a new recipe and made some avocado ranch dressing.  We put it over a yummy taco salad.  We made enough to eat off of for part of the week.

untitled

Full disclosure: the only thing I helped prepare was the taco meat. I’m not a cook.

Sunday

On Sunday we had church responsibilities and then we went to see Michael’s parents.  We hadn’t yet celebrated my birthday or my father in law’s birthday.  We went out to eat, then came back to his parents house for dessert and presents.

How was your week? When was the last time you tried a new recipe?

Weekly Update – 4/25/16 + My brother got married!

This was a great week.  Mostly because I was lazy and because my brother got married!!!!

Monday

Got in a quick mile before yoga.  Class was pretty crowded.  My knee is still getting better, but there are some things I do that it says “nope” to.  Its been two months!

Tuesday

I didn’t get a workout in.  My hand wash/gentle laundry (aka all of my work clothes) has been piling up and I needed to get it done.  I hate doing it because I have to hang dry all of them and it stinks.  So I got that done and starting getting myself together for my brother’s wedding this weekend.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, I got some more laundry done, and packed for the weekend.

Thursday

Left work early to head up to Charlottesville for my brother’s wedding!  The trip was pretty uneventful.  We got checked into our hotel, then grabbed dinner at a steakhouse.  I had some wonderful salmon!

Friday

On Friday, we got up to head into Charlottesville so I could get my nails done with the girls.  It was a fun time, full of mimosas and getting to know each other.  After Michael and I left Charlottesville, we went back to the hotel to get some lunch and get ready for rehearsal.  We got to Veritas early for rehearsal and had a glass of wine.  Rehearsal finished early, so we had some more wine until it was time to go to dinner.

Dinner was at a cool place called “The Local” in Charlottesville.  Yummy food and a great time.

Saturday

My brother got married!!! I’ll spare you all the details so here are the highlights:

  • getting ready starting at 10am for a 6pm wedding
  • Lots of champagne
  • pretty hair and makeup
  • bride freaking out about the weather
  • deciding to hold the wedding outside because its not supposed to rain until 9pm
  • rains through the entire outside wedding
  • we dance and party the night away

Sunday

Sunday was spent recovering from our hangovers.  We got on the road around 10:30, stopped at Tiffanys to get our rings cleaned, then stopped at the Continental for a late brunch, complete with mimosas and omelets!

It was a great week and now its back to reality! How was y0ur week?

Lifestyle Change & Goals

I’ve not talked a lot about it, because its been quite embarrassing to talk about.  I’ve gained weight.  A lot of weight.  I now weigh more than I ever have before, more than I did in 2012 when I lost 30 lbs.

Now, before you lecture me about proper body image, I want to say that I know that a number on a scale is not everything.  There are many other indicators of health – fitness, good blood pressure, good cholesterol, a strong, healthy body.  Unfortunately, a lot of those other markers are not where they should be, just like my weight. In fact, my goal weight is still considered “overweight.” But its a weight I have felt strong and healthy at in the past.  I’d even like to get down into a more healthy range, but that’s for phase 2!

Michael and I sat down and laid out some goals recently.  Both of us want to see some improvement.  We will be traveling to Las Vegas in late August, and have set that as a goal to lose some weight.  We have just over 4 months until then.

Some of my goals:

  • Lose 25 pounds (that translates to about 1.5 lbs a week)
  • Get back to under 35 minutes on my 5k – or better!
  • Workout a minimum of 3x/week
  • No eating after 8:30pm
  • Fewer than 2 sodas a day (SUCH a bad habit).
  • No more than one fancy Starbucks drink a week (regular or iced coffee not included)
  • Log food, exercise, and monitor blood pressure
  • Monitor portion sizes and eat appropriate portions

I’m sharing these goals with you as a means of keeping myself accountable.  I find that I very much need accountability to be successful.

One challenge I have is that my doctor and I have decided to tweak some of my medication that I’m on to control some of my “female issues.” I’ll spare you from any more TMI than that.  That being said, I’ve had some wonky side affects in the past.  One of the side affects of my last medication was some of my weight gain.  I’m hoping the side affects will be minimal, but that is something I’ll need to monitor to make sure it won’t derail my plans.

I share all this with you since I’ll probably need some help and encouragement.  Anyone who has struggled losing weight will tell you that its very difficult and can be very discouraging if progress is not being made.

I like to think of this blogging community as very mutually encouraging.  Everyone is at a different place in life and has different goals.

What are some goals you set for yourself recently? What encourages you?

Weekly Update – 8/17/15

Michael and I did fantastically this week – we were active 5 days this week!  We felt wonderful about how well we did! Hopefully that’ll encourage us to keep it up.

Monday

Yoga! Class was pretty good, but I have these terrible inability to hold a crescent lunge…and that was her favorite thing to do on Monday.  I opted for a kneeling modification, but still struggled with my balance.  Any yogis out there have any tips?!

Tuesday

I used the stick at home pretty extensively, so I didn’t foam roll.  I just jumped on the elliptical for a quick 10 minute warmup.

5 Rounds: 200 meter row, 10 KB Goblet squats

Then I did 5 minutes on the stair -stepper…. holy crap, that’s hard.  New cross training activity?

Wednesday

Yoga was a bit more restorative on Wednesday.  I think she could sense how many newcomers there were to class and made it a bit easier.  As a result I felt like I was one of the more advanced people in the class, which was pretty cool!

Thursday

I foam rolled and stretch awhile, then warmed up with 15 minutes on the elliptical.

5 Rounds:

  1. 1 minutes on the ReACT
  2. 10 TRX Rows

Friday

Friday was a rest day! We had a date night out and saw Vacation Movie.

Saturday

On Saturday, we slept in a little, then got straight to work.  We were having my parents over for dinner so we went grocery shopping, then Michael came back and did all of our normal food prep for the week, as well as prepared everything for dinner.  I got to work on laundry and all of the other cleaning chores.  Our house has not been so clutter free in a long time!

After we got all our work done, we headed to a riverfront neighborhood near us and went for a 2 mile walk.  The weather was great and it was nice to get out of the house.  We came back incredibly exhausted and crashed until my parents got there.  We had a great night and even got to watch my Philadelphia Eagles win their second preseason game!

Sunday

On Sunday, we had church, then we grabbed lunch and ran a few errands.  We stayed up in Newport News because we had a congregational meeting at 4pm.  We spent some time with some friends of ours until then.  The meeting was good, but also left us feeling conflicted about our future at our church.  Not that we don’t love it, its wonderful, but it is pretty far away, and they are talking about purchasing a building even further away. Lots to think about!

How was your week? Are you excited for football season to start up again?

Weekly Update – 8/10/15

Monday

I mowed the lawn after work and STUPIDLY didn’t put on bug spray.  I paid for it hardcore with several dozen bites on the back of my legs.  So itchy!

Tuesday

Warmup: 10 minutes elliptical

Workout:

  1. 1 minute ReACT trainer, 5 pushups (x5)
  2. 200 meter row, 10 KB swings (x5)

I’ve noticed when I do the ReACT that my hip flexors have weakened up quite a bit and I’ve lost some of my flexibility and mobility in my hips.  I need to go back to yoga – that will help loosen them up.

Wednesday

I finally went to yoga! Jaye was a little tough on us, but it was a good class. My hips are super tight.

Thursday

I spend a lot of time foam rolling and stretching.  For some reason, when I foam roll, I tend to neglect my IT band.  When I rolled them for the first time in ages, they hurt so bad!  Guess I need to work on that.

Did a pretty light workout:

  1. 10 minutes elliptical
  2. 3 rounds of :30 bird dog hold each side, then :30 plank
  3. 3 rounds of 10 TRX rows and 10 TRX push ups

Friday

After a crazy week at work, we just relaxed on Friday night.  We got some Mexican food with Michael’s brother and just had a relaxing evening!

Saturday

On Saturday, we woke up early and drove up toward DC to see my brother and his fiancé.  We had a mimosa tour of the house, went for a hike at Great Falls, went to a house warming party, and had homemade strawberry ice cream!  I don’t know how they have so much energy.  By Friday, I’m shot.

Great Falls!

Sunday

We slept in a little bit, then went to a cool restaurant called Ted’s Bulletin for brunch.  I had fabulous chicken and biscuits that I forgot to get a picture of because I devoured it.

Do you have siblings? Do you get to see them often?

Weekly Update – 8/3/15

Monday

Since Michael and I were away all weekend, Monday night was a night for us to catch up on a lot of stuff. We food prepped for the week, did a bunch of laundry, and got the house back in working order.  I will get back to yoga one day!

Tuesday

Warmup: 15 minutes on the elliptical

Workout:

3 Rounds:

  1. 10 TRX rows
  2. 10 bodyweight squats

3 Rounds:

  1. 20 Russian Twists
  2. Bird Dog – 30 sec each side

Wednesday

We went for a double date with some friends of ours.  We went to No Frill Grill and it was yummy!

IMG_3561

Fish Tacos!

Thursday

Thursday was a super easy workout day.  I just did 15 minutes on the elliptical and then did a ton of stretching and mobility exercises.  I’ve neglected them, and I’m paying for it. I hear yoga calling my name.

I got my real workout when I got home and weeded the front flower bed.

Friday

On Friday, we had Michael’s parents over for dinner, then proceeded to play blackjack all night. Its always great to see them.

Saturday

Saturday was a pretty chill day.  I had hopes of getting the yard done, but the rain had different ideas.  We got a lot of house chores done, then in the afternoon we went to see Ricki and the Flash.  It wasn’t an amazing movie, but it was good and entertaining.  And of course, how could you not love Meryl Streep?! If I ever had the opportunity to meet that woman, I’d probably turn into a pile of mush.  She’s fabulous.

IMG_3567

My husband got me pretty flowers!

Sunday

After church, we grabbed a quick lunch, ran some errands, then headed to my dad’s for a Greek dinner.  My stepmom’s brother was in town, and they made some of her mother’s favorite Greek recipes for dinner.  I’m not a huge Greek food fan, but she made some of the foods I really like!

What movies have you seen lately? Do you like Greek food?

Florida Pt. 2

This is a continuation of Florida Part One. Sorry it took so long to get out…I’ve had some unexpected excitement! On Wednesday, we began the trek to Key West…my favorite part of the trip. We knew the drive was going to take about 4 1/2 hours, but we were willing to take our time.  The first part of our drive  until we got to Marathon was pretty uneventful. The second half was really slow!

We arrived in Key West and navigated straight to the Cypress House, a cute bed and breakfast that was built in 1888.  They took our luggage up to our room and gave us a free parking pass.  We parked down the street and walked back to the room.  It was beautiful.

The most beautiful thing was sitting on the nightstand….a gorgeous boquet of flowers! Michael had snuck away from me while we were in Ft. Lauderdale and contacted the Cypress House.  They arranged to have an arrangement made and delivered to our room.  Do I have the sweetest guy, or what?!

We freshened up then hit Duval Street.  For those of you who haven’t been to Key West, this is the main street, where all the bars and shops are.  We hit up Irish Kevins for a pre dinner drink and then did some exploring.  We settled on Fogarty’s for dinner.  After dinner, we had a great dessert from a local bakery 🙂

We crashed early.  Got up the next morning (Thursday) and had breakfast downstairs.  We brought our coffee back up to the room and sat on our porch.  We each took turns getting ready and we set out for the day.  We went on the Conch Train to get a tour of the city. Key West has so much history and so much Cuban culture.  We got off around Southernmost Point (90 miles to Cuba).  We walked around for awhile, taking in the sights and exploring some nice hotels.

We went to a cute place called Two Friends Cafe for lunch.  After lunch we went shopping along Duval, much to Michael’s dismay.  We had dinner that night at Caroline’s and I had the best blackened Mahi Mahi I’ve ever had.

On Friday morning we went through our normal morning ritual.  We spent some time hanging out in the room, then we went to Bo’s Fish Wagon for a snack while we were waiting for Dante’s pool bar to re-open from a private party.  We ate lunch, hung out, then went back to the room to get ready for our sunset cruise.

The sunset cruise was amazing.  The weather was perfect, the staff was funny, and the wine and food was incredible.  We had a blast and met so many interesting people.

Saturday was the day we left Key West and I was so sad! We drove back from Key West to West Palm Beach to hang out with his cousins.  These cousins are the children of his aunt and uncle that we stayed with at the beginning of our trip.  We sat out on their porch, drinking and eating.

We got up on Sunday morning and drove all the way to the west coast of Florida to Ft. Myers.  We had an incredible lunch with two of Michael’s friends.  I decided to leave my beautiful flower arrangement with them so that they could enjoy it.  I didn’t want to just leave it in a hotel room!

After lunch we drove to Orlando.  We checked into our hotel and then had dinner at Cafe Tu Tu Tango with some of my friends from a vendor the bank uses. I had a southwest chicken flatbread and some jalapeno mac and cheese.  It was so yummy and it was so good to see them!

We stayed at the Gaylord Palms in Orlando.  It was a beautiful 4-star hotel that I’ve stayed at for work before.  We spent the last full day of our trip lounging by the pool.  It was such a good way to close out the trip.

Our flight out on Tuesday was uneventful.  We were sad to be leaving, but very happy to be heading home to familiar territory 🙂

And that’s it!  It was a great trip that I will never forget!

Florida Pt.1

As promised – stories from my Florida vacation!

We flew out on Saturday, March 29.  It was a nasty, rainy day when we flew out of Norfolk.  Our flight was supposed to depart at 11:15AM, so like good flyers, we arrived a bit before 9AM.  We parked the car in long term parking, checked our bags and got through security by 9AM.

Ready to go on vacation!

Ready to go on vacation!

I decided not to get any coffee because I would have to use the bathroom on the flight…and that did not sound appealing to me (even though the flight to Orlando was less than 2 hours).

What Michael and I didn’t know is that there was really bad weather in Orlando – thunderstorm and tornado watches/warnings.  They delayed our flight till 12, 1, 2, 3….then finally we took off at about 3:45pm. In the midst of one of those breaks, we decided that we needed Starbucks – these were the resulting pictures:

Very unhappy face

When we finally arrived, we had to get our baggage (which took forever) and get our rental car.  Then we had to drive about an hour to Leesburg.  I was NOT a happy camper, I was hangry.  I think it was about 8pm before we got there!

We stayed with his Aunt and Uncle (his dad’s twin brother).  They made us some fantastic tilapia, potatoes (red and sweet) and some vegetable I cannot recall at the moment.

We woke up the next morning  (Sunday) and had coffee and breakfast.  They make smoothies with their Vitamix every day.  They use chocolate protein powder and mix in strawberries, pears, apples, pineapples, blueberries and bananas.  It was SO GOOD.

They didn't know my affinity for owls when they gave my coffee to me!

They didn’t know my affinity for owls when they gave my coffee to me!

We then drove about 45 minutes to a nearby town called Mount Dora.  It was a quaint little downtown area where we had lunch on a balcony and walked around for a bit.

Overlooking Mount Dora!

We also went to a swap meet/farmer’s market type place that was actually really neat.  I was enjoying myself too much to snap any pictures there.

We went back to Leesburg and I promptly laid down for a nap.  I was so tired from our travels the day before.  I woke up and we had drinks and snacks out on the screen porch.  We had a wonderful dinner of crockpot lasagna. Yum!

Mmm Corona :)

Mmm Corona 🙂

We woke up the next morning (Monday) and were headed to Ft. Lauderdale. Had our fruit smoothies and some coffee and got on the road. We stopped at Panera for lunch.  It truly felt like the start of our vacation since we finally got to be alone!

We had dinner with his aunt (his mother’s sister), cousin and her kids.  She made some wonderful, delicious food! We left there and headed to our hotel by the water.

We spent the next day (Tuesday) walking around, eating, shopping, and going to the pool.  I could have spent a ton of time in Ft. Lauderdale.  It was a beautiful beach and there was a ton to do! It was a good place to walk around and just enjoy the weather.

On Wednesday, we got up early because we were heading to KEY WEST!  I had another omelet panini (hey, don’t judge) and we began the 4 1/2 hour trek to Key West where we would spend the next 4 days.  That’s a story for another post 🙂

Florida Trip Recap
