Fair weather runner – tips needed!

Ok, I’ll admit it.  I’m a fair weather runner/walker/exerciser.  I don’t run outdoors when its raining.  That’s what they make treadmills for.  I’ve been extremely blessed on race day – I’ve never had to run a race in the rain.  I had a race cancelled for rain and rescheduled for the next week.  I’ve run in cold, wind, and finished a race and had it rain immediately after, but never run a race in the rain.

However, it seems my day will finally be here!

On Saturday I’ll be walking (lets be honest, I won’t be running after not training!) the Crawlin Crab 5k.  Right now, the forecast doesn’t look so good.  Assuming they don’t cancel, I’ll be doing this race in the rain.

I know that I’ll need to check a dry bag so that I have dry clothes afterward, but to be honest, I’m pretty clueless about everything else!

Any advice for how to dress? How do I avoid blisters if my socks and shoes are soaked?

Weekly Update – 9/21/15

I’m doing a much better job at consistently getting to the gym.  I think it helps a lot with my stress levels, and gives me a good outlet.  This week was a little different due to having Jaye gone and having subs for all her classes.

Since Jaye is gone for about a month, I have to get used to Monday night not being a true yoga night.  Looks like on Monday’s we will be doing Les Mills Body Flow.  I’ve done this class before.  It combines yoga, Tai Chi, and pilates. Its not terrible.  I also like that its only 55 minutes as opposed to the 75 minute yoga class.  Frees up a little more of my evening! Class was good, but it’ll take a little getting used to.

I ate a snack before the gym that did not sit right with me.  I had the worst heartburn. As a result, I didn’t push it too hard.

Warm up: Foam Roll and 1/2 mile on the elliptical

5 Rounds:

  1. 1 minute on the ReACT trainer
  2. 10 TRX rows

Cool down: walking lunges and walking single leg RDLs

Funny thing seen at the gym….watching someone do wall balls and break the wall!

Also….a girl did that! 🙂

So now that I was expecting Wednesday night not to be Vinyasa flow, but instead was going to be this Stretch and Strengthen class, I was more ok with it.  Still not sure if I like the class, but its better than nothing!

Warm up: Foam Roll

Two Rounds:

  1. Walking RDLs with 10 lb DBs
  2. Walking Lunges with 10 lb DBs

5 Rounds:

  1. 200 Meter Row
  2. 10 body weight squats

On Friday night, Michael and I went to the movies with my mom and stepdad to see The Intern.  I love Anne Hathaway and have really begun to love DeNiro in comedies.  It was a great movie.

On Saturday I got to sleep in!  After awhile, we went to a local community to meet with a builder to learn about their building process and the base prices of their homes.  We like the builder and the area, but we aren’t sure about the school system.  Its also much father away from the interstate, and that’s a convenience factor we aren’t sure we are ready to compromise on.  Afterward, we went to his parents house for a late lunch and spent some good time with that.  We had a pretty lazy night at home.

On Sunday, we went to church, then headed home for an absolutely lazy day. It was delightful and just what the doctor ordered.  We watched some football and my Eagles finally won!

Weekly Update – 9/14/15

This week was pretty decent.  I give myself a C+ on workouts this week, but an A+ on life!

Yoga was good with my classmates.  This was Jaye’s last Monday class for awhile, as she’ll be traveling to Hawaii to see some family.  We will be doing some power yoga while she’s gone on Mondays.  I’m not really a fan, but its better than nothing.

Warmup: Foam Roll

2 Rounds:

  1.  Walking RDLs with 10lb dumbbells
  2. Walking lunges with 10lb dumbbells

5 Rounds:

  1. 200 Meter Row
  2. 10 squats

Jaye was out and we had a sub.  Not a fan of subs.  It ended up being like a dance stretch class or something.  It was terrible.  I almost walked out to go home and do actual yoga. I know that sounds like I have a really terrible attitude, but I was really looking forward to yoga and the sub didn’t even attempt to do any.

I skipped the gym on Thursday.  My body was telling me that I needed a rest day, so I happily complied!

On Friday, Michael and I had a date night to go see Maze Runner: Scorch Trials.  I loved it, he hated it.  Go figure!  But it was nice to get out and have a date night with just us.

We got to sleep in on Saturday (woo hoo!) and we had a pretty lazy morning.  Later on, we went to the ODU football game and tailgate.  We had the most wonderful pumpkin spice shooters with fireball in them.  All the food was good (but bad for you!) and the game was decent.  ODU held their own against a rated team, but they ended up losing.

After church on Sunday, Michael went to the store and we did all our food prep for the week. After that, we headed over to my mom’s house to watch the Eagles game, which was a giant disaster.

How was your week? Did your football team win this week?

September Stitch Fix Review (Stitch Fix #10)

I say this every time: I know this is outside of my normal fitness/running blogging, but hey – its my blog, and I want to blog about my awesome clothes!  I actually managed to take semi real pictures this time! You should be proud!

Here’s how it works: You set up a style profile and you receive a box with 5 items in it.  You can choose the frequency with which you set up the box …once a month, every other month, etc.  You pay $20 to receive a box.  If you keep anything, that $20 goes toward your purchase.  If you keep all 5 items, you get a discount!  They send you anything from jewelry, to clothes to handbags. If you don’t want to keep an item, they have an envelope to send them back.

What I love about this is that I get a stylist that looks at my style profile and picks out items just for ME.  You can even link to a pinterest board so they can get inspiration and a better look into what you like.

Spoiler alert: I almost kept everything!!!

Item Number 1 – Street Level Huron Mixed-Material Reversible Tote ($54)

Nice, but not a stunner!

This was a pretty cool tote, I liked the fact that it was reversible.  But I have a ton of totes, and there was nothing particularly special about this one to me….especially not for $54.

Verdict: Return

Item Number 2 – Market & Spruce Aleah Heathered V-Neck Dolman Top ($)48

Looks a little dark here, but its forest green.

So I’ve been pinning Dolman tops for awhile, but haven’t gotten any.  This one is great.  The material is super soft and the color is great!  I’m fair skinned with dark hair, so jewel tones tend to look good on me.

Verdict: Keep

Item Number 3 –  Papermoon Keever Button Back Blouse ($48)

Love the button back!

Ahhh so cute!

This was the top in my last fix that I loved.  I wanted to keep it so bad, but it was just too small!  I was so pleased to see that my stylist had sent it to me in a bigger size.  It fits great and I can’t wait to wear it!

Verdict: Keep (DUH!)

Item Number 4 – Skies are Blue Tabor Crochet Detail Blouse ($58)

I was cautiously optimistic about this one when I pulled it out, but when I tried it on it was wayyyy too short.  The cut was not flattering at all.

Verdict: Return

Item Number 5 – Market & Spruce Elissa French Terry Striped Moto Jacket  ($74)

This was a bit of a surprise for me.  For some reason, I don’t do well with stitch fix and jackets.  But this was a slam dunk! I love it.  Its very comfortable and I love the zipper and button details.

Vedict: Keep

Overall Impression

I loved the style of everything.  Had the Skies are Blue blouse worked, I may have just kept the tote to get the 25% discount off the whole box.  However, I couldn’t justify keeping all of that when I didn’t love the tote and the blouse didn’t work.  Style-wise, this was great.  My stylist is fantastic and I love the mix of things she’s sending me.  I asked for more fall stuff next fix!

Weekly Update – 9/7/15

This week was pretty uneventful.  I didn’t get as many workouts in as I wanted, but I was glad I pushed myself to get to yoga class on Friday since I had missed my normal Monday and Wednesday yoga classes.

I talked about Monday in last week’s post!

I had a pretty exhausting day at work on Tuesday, but I forced myself to go to the gym anyway.

Warmup: Foam Roll

Conditioning: 1 mile on the elliptical

5 Rounds:

  1. ReACT Trainer – 1 minute
  2. 10 TRX Rows

Skipped yoga on account that it was my husband’s birthday! We went to Outback Steakhouse to celebrate 🙂

Isn’t he cute with his rum drink?

I was a little all over the place on Thursday.

Warmup: 1/2 mile on the elliptical

3 Rounds:

  1. 10 KB Goblet Squats
  2. Farmer’s Carry

3 Rounds:

  1. Kneeling Lunge Overhead press (5 each side)

Cool down/mobility:

  1. Walking RDLs
  2. Walking Lunges

I think I pushed it on Thursday, cause my poor glutes and hammys hated me! I decided that since I hadn’t been able to make it to yoga all week, Neve’s hatha yoga class on Friday night was just what I needed.  However, Jaye was subbing, so we ended up doing more flow.  I will say that Jaye really did attempt to make class a hatha class.  We did a lot of stretchy stuff, which was good, but was a challenge due to my soreness!

Ouch, I woke up double sore on Saturday.  I had to get up at 6am, because we had a big application install at work. I worked about 8 hours, then my husband and I went to the ODU football game.  We ended up getting drenched at the tailgate because of some afternoon storms, then the storms came back right before halftime.  We decided it was time to pack up and go.

On Sunday, we went to church in the morning, then came home and did all our grocery shopping.  We had an early dinner at my dad’s to celebrate his birthday and Michael’s birthday.  Afterward, we came back home and did our food prep for the week.

How was your week? How do you celebrate birthdays in your family?

Weekly Update – 8/31/15

I found that I’m a much happier person when I workout more consistently.  Yoga has been helping me with my mobility, which makes my other workouts much more productive.

Yoga was particularly difficult for me on Monday night. She was doing a lot of hip openers that just hurt too much.  I opted for a LOT of child’s pose this class!  But it was great to see my yoga buddies.  I always miss them on Wednesday nights.

Warmup: Foam Roll

Conditioning: 1 mile on the elliptical, keeping my heart rate under 150.  (Much harder than it sounds for me!)

3 Rounds:

  1. Resistance band lateral squats
  2. 5 single leg RDLs (each side)

Yoga was nice and restorative on Wednesday.  When we do standing balancing positions, she normally does them as separate exercises, but this time she did a flow.  It was very different and very difficult.  I like that even with a more restorative class, she throws in a few new challenges!

Warmup: 1 mile on the elliptical, keeping my heart rate under 150

5 Rounds:

  1. 200 Meter Row
  2. 10 KB Goblet Squats (20lbs)

Friday night was just a relaxing night at home.

Saturday – Sunday

On Saturday morning, we got up to drive to Baltimore.  We were meeting Michael’s cousins at Horseshoe Casino.  We stayed there for the weekend.  We were practicing some new Blackjack strategies and ended up making about $150.  Not too shabby!

Bonus Day: Monday

On Monday, we headed back from the casino.  We stopped to see Michael’s Aunt Sally on the way home.  It’s always good to see her. We got to meeting his cousin’s new baby as well!

How was your week? Did you do anything fun for Labor Day?
