Race Recap: Shamrock 8k 2017

I know this recap is super late – but better late than never!

This is one of my favorite races, despite the fact that the weather is almost always crummy.  Guess that’s what happens when you have a race in March at the oceanfront.

Packet Pick-up/Expo

My stepmom and I went to packet pick-up on Friday night.  We walked through all the vendors, but didn’t get into a whole lot.  She got a new pair of sunglasses, and I got a new flip belt.  They’ve made a few adjustments and I love it!

Race Day Conditions/Attire

The forecast threatened rain, but it was supposed to be in the high-40s/low 50s.  I wore capris and a short sleeved shirt with a long-sleeved shirt over it.  I brought a poncho just in case it started raining.  I learned my lesson from last year.

Pre-Race

We parked about 15 blocks away from the start and had a decent walk to the start line.  We hit the porta-potties with about 15 minutes to spare.  We got in our corrals and just enjoyed all the costumes and excitement.

Race Time

The first 2 miles went by in the blink of an eye.  I lost my stepmom less than a quarter mile in – even though I know she’d leave me because she’s speedy. We faced a headwind for most of that time.  When the course turned onto the boardwalk, we had the wind at our back.  I took advantage of that and alternated running and walking.

Around the 3.5 mile mark, I started noticing that my sock was rubbing and I was getting a blister.  I tried to adjust, but it didn’t seem to help.

I hunkered down for the last mile or so on the boardwalk back into the headwind. I hoped to finish under and hour and 15 min, but finished very close in 1:15:13.

After Party

I gathered all my food and swag after the race and headed to the tent.  I found my Dad and stepmom, grabbed a beer and enjoyed some of my food.  The music is always great – it is just usually SO CROWDED in the tent that we don’t stay long.

When we finally decided to leave, it had started raining.  I put on my poncho, and they had rain jackets, but we still got soaked walking 10 blocks to our car.

Overall Reactions

Despite the rain at the end, this was a good race and I wouldn’t miss it even despite the terrible weather.

Weekly Update – 3/20/2017

Not much to talk about, it was a nice easy week.  I really didn’t workout, but it was nice to relax.  I’ve had a lot of work stress recently, and I needed a little self care.

Monday

Monday was a rest day after Shamrock over the weekend.  My plantar fasciitis was mad at me.

Tuesday

On Tuesday I got in 2 quick miles on the treadmill.

Wednesday

I skipped yoga on Wednesday because I was just downright exhausted.  I think my lack of Vitamin D (due to losing my window seat) is affecting my energy levels.

Thursday

Thursday was date night with my husband.  We enjoyed a nice night in and a Netflix movie.

Friday

My husband was out of town on Friday, so I had dinner with my brother-in-law.  We had a nice night eating Mexican food!

Saturday

On Saturday, Michael was still out of town, so I enjoyed the day with my mom.  We had lunch, then went to see Beauty and the Beast.  The movie was good, but I really love the original. We spent some time talking and enjoying each other’s company.  It was a really nice day.

Sunday

On Sunday, we slept in, got some Cracker Barrel for brunch, then got some chores done.  We went out later to the Oceanfront to enjoy the beautiful weather.

Weekly Update – 3/13/17

This was a pretty good week, although it was pretty cold.  I guess winter isn’t ready to let go yet.  This week also brought my second race for the year.

Monday

Michael had to work late on Monday, and with it being cold out and I was tired….I didn’t want to go to the gym.

Tuesday

We went to the gym on Tuesday after work.  I got in 2 miles on the treadmill.

Wednesday

Yoga was great on Wednesday.  Class was unusually full.  She really worked our hips this class, and it felt fantastic.

Thursday

Date night! I was looking forward to this, because I feel like Michael and I don’t get to spend a lot of quality time during the week.

Friday

Friday was moving day at work.  I moved to another building.  We have a “campus” at work.  My reporting structure has changed over the years, and they are moving me in the same building as my new boss. I’m not really happy about the move. I have been in this building for a few years and I have a great seat by a window.

I left early on Friday to go pick up my race packet for the Shamrock 8k on Saturday. More on that in my race recap!

Saturday

Saturday was the Shamrock 8k.  Recap to come – but good news, I didn’t get rained on till I walked back to my car to leave!

I came home to some BEAUTIFUL flowers that Michael got me.  Michael and I spent the rest of the day relaxing, watching TV, getting laundry done, etc.

Sunday

After church on Sunday, we went out to Cracker Barrel with Michael’s parents.  It was a nice time! We even got some snow in the morning, which was beautiful.

Weekly Update – 3/6/2017

The work week was pretty uneventful, but we did have a nice weekend with family.  Its getting easier to get motivated now that I can see an end to winter.

Monday

I was exhausted all day on Monday.  We had a nice evening in.

Tuesday

On Tuesday we headed to the gym.  I did a quick 2.10 miles on the treadmill.

Wednesday

Went to yoga on Wednesday like planned.  Class was good, but I modified to easier poses.  For some reason the knee that I fell on last year was bothering me.

Thursday

We had date night on Thursday and went out for Mexican food.  I’m really enjoying our weekly date nights.  Its nice to intentionally spend time together. We spent some time planning our trip to Seattle.

Friday

My brother was in town for his birthday, and to pick up his new sweet Corgi pup.  Kona was the highlight of the night at my mom’s house.  We had a nice time celebrating with family.

Saturday

On Saturday, I had to work for a bit in the morning.  After I wrapped up my work, we headed to the gym and I got in 2 miles on the treadmill.  My time on the treadmill felt really good.  Lots of energy. We met my brother up at our new house and got to show him around.  We have a driveway and sidewalk now!

We had some errands to run that afternoon, so we did all those items before heading to my dad’s for my brother’s birthday celebration there.

Sunday

After church on Sunday, we had a pretty lazy day.  Did some laundry, grocery shopping, food prep, and watched lots of HGTV.  I even took a pretty nice nap, since Daylight Savings Time took its toll on me.

Weekly Update -2/27/2017

This week was a bit better for workouts.  I pushed myself to try to get back into strength training.  The week was extremely long for me; seemed like an eternity.  The massive swings in the weather didn’t help!

Monday

Michael was traveling for a work trip.  I desperately needed a haircut and had scheduled one for when he’d be away.  I go through phases where I let my hair grow long, then I very suddenly feel the need to cut it, and act on it quickly!

My hair feels so much healthier and lighter with about 4-5 inches gone.

Tuesday

I decided to workout at home. Michael was out of town, and working out at home takes up less time than driving to the gym.  I hit the treadmill for 1.5 miles in my new shoes. Then I did 3 rounds of the following:

  1. 10 bodyweight squats
  2. :30 plank
  3. 10 crunches*

*First round were normal crunches, next round was legs at 90 angle, next was legs up with ankles crossed.

I remembered that I had intended to do lunges in that mix, so I added 10 on each side to the last round.

I’ve not done any strength training in a long time.  I really miss it, but its REALLY hard to get back into it.  I’m going to make it my goal to start small (as evidenced by the simplicity of this workout), but I know I need to do it and fight through the hard part.

Wednesday

Wednesday during the day was beautiful in terms of temperature.  We have been in the 70s and 80s all week.  We were supposed to get severe storms on Wednesday night, so I debated not attending yoga.  However, I decided to go, and I didn’t regret it.  I had some soreness from the squats I did on Tuesday, and class helped stretch me out.  We did a lot of hip openers, which was fantastic.

Michael was supposed to be home on Wednesday night, but because of the severe weather, his flight was cancelled.

Thursday

Michael finally made it home!  Thursday night is date night, and I was especially glad for it, considering he’d been gone for a few days.  The soreness from Tuesday’s workout and yoga was setting in and I was glad for a day off.

Friday

On Friday, we had a night in and had Jersey Mike’s and watched a movie on Netflix.  It started getting really cold for the weekend, so it was nice just to spend the night in.

Saturday

On Saturday, I got up and got 2 miles in on the treadmill, while Michael got his hair cut.  We got our showers and relaxed for a little while.  Michael had sushi with his brother and went to run errands, and I stayed home and relaxed and cleaned up some around the house.  We went out to Mexican later – and then watched HGTV all night.

Sunday

On Sunday, we attended the new church we’ve been visiting, then had lunch with the pastor, his wife, and another couple.  We’ve really felt welcomed by them, and it was nice to get to know them all a little better.  After church we came stopped by the new house and took some pictures, then headed home where I did all the laundry and Michael meal prepped for the week.  We had a nice relaxing evening.

Weekly Update – 2/20/2017

I did only moderately better with my workouts this past week, but some progress is better than no progress!  I’m hoping my new shoes will give me some added motivation this coming week…

Monday

I covered Monday on last week’s post.

Tuesday

After work we hit up the gym for a workout.  I got in 2.25 miles on the treadmill and Michael hit the weights.  I was sore from my massage on Sunday – she really dug into my back and my legs, and I was feeling it!

Wednesday

Yoga was great on Wednesday.  I didn’t get my normal “spot” in class, but that was actually a good thing.  Let me step out of my comfort zone.  Jaye and I talked about music for class before and I gave her a list of music I thought she’d like.  I’m excited to see if she uses any of it for class!

Thursday

Thursday was an interesting day.  We discovered the weather stripping around my windshield was coming off, so we took it to the shop.  Michael ended up having to work really late, so I got a ride to pick up my car from a coworker of mine.  I didn’t know what time to expect Michael home…thought he’d only be a little late – and Thursday night is usually date night.  I should have capitalized on the free time to fit in a workout, but I didn’t.

Friday

On Friday we had Mexican food with my brother in law.

Saturday

We had 2 showings on our house on Saturday, so I had a busy morning.  I got up, did a very quick 1.5 miles on the treadmill at home, then got to cleaning.  I consider vacuuming, deep cleaning bathrooms, etc as a very good workout! We went to a local running store to get some new shoes.  Michael got evaluated and fitted and ended up with a pair of Brooks.  I decided to go back to my Saucony Guides.  I’m looking forward to my first workout with them!

We grabbed lunch at YNot Pizza.  They have fantastic chopped salads there.  Since it was a beautiful 70-something degree day, we ate outside.  We went down to the harbor and walked around and did some great people watching.

We wrapped up the evening with a Netflix movie.  I convinced Michael to watch Amadeus, and he loved it!

Sunday

Sunday morning we went to church.  Afterwards, we had lunch with my dad and stepmom, then drove out to a model home that is the same floorplan as our new house.  They have seen our new house in progress, but haven’t seen a fully decked out model.  They loved it! Afterward, we went to the new house and walked around.  I snapped a few pictures.  The house is really coming together!

Weekly Update – 2/13/2017

This was not a great week for working out, but a great, relaxing week. Better luck next week!

Monday

Since we knew we were going to miss a workout on Tuesday night, we decided to work out on Monday, which is normally a rest day for us.

….And then Monday happened and that didn’t happen.

Tuesday

Every year, our CEO sends valentines to all of the women in the company.  Here is my cute little bundle of carnations!

We have a tradition of going down to the oceanfront and having dinner at Isle of Capri for Valentine’s Day.  It is a great Italian restaurant on the 6th floor of a hotel overlooking the water.

I had a house Caesar salad (which is made table side!) and the Chicken Normandy.  I also had a few glasses of wine and some tiramisu for dessert.  I took one bite of my dessert and asked for the rest of it to be wrapped up.  I was stuffed.

Wednesday

I skipped yoga.  I was exhausted after work.

Thursday

On Thursday, we met with the builder to go over all of our options one more time (after a little issue we had recently).  We went to the gym after work and I got 2 miles in on the treadmill.

Friday

Friday was fairly uneventful.  We went to get some Mexican food after work. We came home and watched some home movies of me and my brother.  Michael loves seeing old videos of me and my family.

Saturday

On Saturday, we ran a bunch of errands, then we had an fundraiser to attend Saturday night.  We met a vendor from work and had a wonderful steak dinner at a restaurant in Virginia Beach, then went to a conference center nearby for a casino night fundraiser. The theme was Great Gatsby (or cocktail attire).  Some people really went all out, but as you can see – we just dressed nice instead.

Sunday

We went up to Dover on Sunday to go to the Dover Downs casino.  Michael wanted to go play blackjack and he bribed me with a massage.

I got a lovely hot stone massage while he played.  We had dinner at the casino, and I went up to the hotel room to watch The Walking Dead.

Bonus Day: Monday Holiday

Since it was a holiday weekend, we stayed overnight at Dover.  We slept in on Monday, had Bob Evans for breakfast, and then hit the road.  We stopped at Island Creamery in Chincoteague.  It was a nice mild day for February.

Our little detour took awhile, and we got home around 4.  After getting some laundry done, we went to have dinner at my mom’s and catch up with her for a bit.
